Fur Traders Expedition: An Indigenous Cultural Experience
(Pimiškâw ᐱᒥᔥᑳᐤ - to paddle)
Journey back in time with us to the days of yore and make the historical Cree fur traders canoe trek to Moose Fort, now Moose Factory - the 2nd oldest english language settlement in Ontario. Begin your adventure riding the Polar Bear Express to a small isolated settlement called Moose River Crossing. Once there, you can relax in a teepee and get to know your hosts as they prepare a traditional Cree Meal, or go fishing (you will need to get a license before you come). Go to the Government of Ontario website for more details on how to get your license, or you can explore the old settlement and adjoining forest. After spending a night in a homely cabin by the river, pack up your canoe with the package of furs you will be trading at Moose Fort and begin your paddling expedition. As you make your way north past black spruce forests, keep your eyes peeled for polar bears, black bears, moose, caribou, eagles and falcons. And when the day starts to wind down, set up camp on a sandy beach for the night and while enjoying an indigenous meal cooked over the fire, gaze up in wonder at the brilliance of the constellations and perhaps even the Northern Lights. Begin the next day paddling through (or walking around) the famous Kwetabohigan rapids on your way North up Moose River. Arrive at Moosonee for another evening of Cree cuisine and stories. Next day, cross the river to Moose Fort and tour the Hudson Bay company staffhouse. Trade your furs for some Cree cultural crafts before boarding the freighter canoe to James Bay, the southern tip of the Arctic Ocean where seals and beluga whales are also commonly seen. If the conditions are right, you might even get to instead paddle to the edge of the Arctic Ocean! Fishing highlights (for those with a license) (https://www.ontario.ca/page/fishing) include the chance to catch trophy walleye and sea-run brook trout as well as burbot, jumbo perch and monster pike!
