Snowshoe Expedition across James Bay

Your 11 day 100-mile adventure is the trip of a lifetime. You will not want to miss this opportunity to test your limits, live off the land and truly experience how the Cree lived in this harsh but beautiful northern climate.

Day 1.

Take the Polar Bear Express train from Cochrane to Moosonee. Truly a bucket list trip complete with dining car and old-fashioned comfort watching the landscapes gradually transform the further north you go! Visit historic Moose Factory, Ontario and Hudson’s Bay staff house. On your first evening in Moosonee you will be treated to an indigenous feast, accompanied by the cultural wisdom and stories shared by a Cree elder, including a smudge offering that everyone stays well and safe in the days to come. Finally, it will also be your first opportunity to see the Northern Lights, weather permitting. Overnight at Keepaychum or Hudson’s Bay Staffhouse or in a two-star hotel.

Day 2.

Sunrise on the amazing winterscape of James Bay, normally between 7 and 8 am in March. On this first day out, and towards the end of the expedition as well, there will be opportunities to harvest small game such as grouse, ptarmigan and rabbits. There will also be ice-fishing each day, with a shore lunch around a campfire and a store of dried food for this self-supported expedition. Ice and snow will be melted each day to fill up your water bottle until the next stop. You will enjoy freshly made Bannock around the campfire at night along with fried fish and whatever other harvested meats are available.

Days 3 to 10 (11 or 12 if inclement weather causes delays) will follow the same pattern, weather permitting. The morning after arriving in Waskaganish, you will be sledded back to Moosonee in time for the evening Polar Bear Express to Cochrane.
